The North Australia and Rangelands Fire Information (NAFI) fire-tracking website has received $729,000 of federal funding, allowing the service to continue operating for another year. The NAFI website was developed by Charles Darwin University as a real-time fire tracking tool, providing satellite maps of active fires and comprehensive information on fire history across the north.

The cattle industry uses it to help protect livestock, fodder and infrastructure, saving it millions of dollars a year. Traditional owners use it to help manage country. This information is needed for planning, assessing, and reporting on fire management, and for measuring fire-based emissions. The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements was told this month that NAFI should be funded long-term and rolled out across the nation.
